Opportunity Filter

Not every opportunity deserves your time. Learn to tell which do.

What it is
A short checklist that scores any business idea or program against your vision, your map and a list of warning signs.
Why it matters
Online, almost everything is described as life-changing. A filter lets you decide by facts instead of excitement.
The problem it solves
Jumping into the next exciting offer, spending money and time, then discovering it does not fit you or is not what it claimed.

How to use it, step by step

Run each opportunity you are considering through the same seven questions. Score each from 1 (poor) to 5 (strong).

1. Fit with my vision
Does it support the life I described in Big Vision?
2. Fit with my skills and interests
Could I enjoy and improve at this for a year?
3. Time and cost
Can I afford the hours and any money without risking my basics?
4. Real demand
Are real people already paying for this kind of help?
5. Clear way to learn
Is there honest training and support, with realistic claims?
6. Transparency
Are costs, terms and typical results stated plainly, without hype?
7. Comfort with the work
Would I be proud to explain what I am doing to someone I respect?

Red flags: stop and think

  • Guaranteed income, or earnings screenshots with no context
  • Pressure to decide today, or fake countdowns
  • Unclear costs, or surprise add-ons after you join
  • More focus on recruiting than on helping real customers
  • You cannot find the terms or any honest statement of typical results

One or two red flags is a reason to ask hard questions. Several is a reason to walk away.

A practical example

An invented example for illustration. Sam compares two ideas: selling handmade goods online and offering freelance social media help. Sam scores each out of 35. Handmade: 21, mostly low on time and cost fit. Freelance help: 29, strong on skills, demand and cost. No red flags on either. Sam picks freelance help and writes down why, so the choice is based on facts.

Your fifteen-minute exercise

List up to three opportunities you are considering. Score each on the seven questions and mark any red flags. Circle the highest score with the fewest red flags.

Common mistakes

Scoring with your heart
Excitement inflates scores. Ask a trusted friend to challenge yours.
Ignoring red flags
Wanting it to be true does not make it true.
