Big Vision

Before you build a business, decide what it is for.

What it is
A short written picture of the life you want your business to support: where you live, how you spend your days, who you spend them with and what matters most.
Why it matters
A clear vision gives your effort a purpose, and purpose is what carries you through slow weeks when motivation fades.
The problem it solves
Working hard without knowing what for, chasing money alone, and quitting the first time it gets difficult.

How to use it, step by step

Give yourself fifteen quiet minutes and a notebook. Write by hand if you can.

Step 1: Picture an ordinary day, three years from now
Where do you wake up? What does your morning look like? Who is around you? Write it in the present tense.
Step 2: Describe how you spend your time
How many hours do you work, and on what? What do you finally have time for?
Step 3: Name your three non-negotiables
The things your business must never cost you, such as family time, health or peace of mind.
Step 4: Say why it matters to you
Write one honest paragraph on why this vision is worth the effort.
Step 5: Shrink it to one sentence
Example: I build a flexible online business that lets me be home for my kids and stop worrying about every bill.
Step 6: Put it where you will see it
Phone lock screen, bathroom mirror, notebook cover. Read it before every work session.

A practical example

An invented example for illustration. Maria works night shifts and misses her kids' mornings. Her vision: I work from home on my own schedule, I make breakfast for my kids, and I have a savings cushion that lets me breathe. Her non-negotiables are family time, sleep and honesty with customers. Notice there is no income number. It describes a life, which is what keeps people going.

Your ten-minute exercise

Write your one-sentence vision and your three non-negotiables on a single card or note. Read them out loud once. That is your Big Vision.

Common mistakes

Making it only about money
A number is not a reason. Describe the life, not just the figure.
Borrowing someone else's dream
Your vision should sound like you, not like an advert.
Writing it once and forgetting it
Revisit it monthly. A vision only works when you see it.

What to do next

Now that you know where you are going, find out where you are starting from.
